The foundation of SGML Eye Hospital traces back to early 2017, when the Swaminarayan Sampradaya’s Mahant Swami Anandjeevandasji identified a pressing need that the rural communities around Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, suffered from limited access to quality eye care. It was during the 2016 Simhastha pilgrimage that a comprehensive needs survey highlighted an alarming prevalence of visual impairments—around 9 million eye patients in the Malwa and adjoining regions of Madhya Pradesh. sparking the decision to build a dedicated eye hospital.

To donate anything, it is necessary to have faith in the heart, selflessness and dedication towards the work for which the donation has been made. Mr. Kamlesh Bhatt, a textile engineer and project manager by profession and his wife Mrs. Alpana Bhatt, head of the painting department at the Government Madhav Arts and Commerce College, Ujjain, donated their three and a half bigha land in Hasampura for the construction of Shiv Gyan Motilal Eye Hospital with the same thought. In the year 2016, during the Simhastha festival, after coming in contact with Mahant Swami Anandjivandasji, they got associated with Shri Swaminarayan sect. Inspired by Swamiji's thoughts, they became a part of this pious work of social service. The initial challenges faced in the construction of the hospital were also faced boldly. This land was about 6 feet lower than the main road, which was leveled and the construction work was started.

The ground breaking ceremony of this hospital was done on 11 February 2017. The hospital has been built with the money donated by devotees of Lord Swaminarayan living in India and abroad. In this, Mr. Rameshbhai Patel of America and his wife Mrs. Manjulaben Patel provided full support with responsibility. Along with this, the support given from the beginning by Dr. Supen Patel, Priti Patel and Mr. Sadgun Amin, Geeta Amin of America is also invaluable.

Following years of construction and planning, the 50‑bed SGML Eye Hospital was officially inaugurated on January 30 2023, by His Holiness 1008 Shree Rakeshprasadji Maharaj of the Vadtal Swaminarayan sect, with Shri Amit Shah (Union Home Minister, Gov of India) & Shri Shivrajsinh ji Chauhan (Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh) participating virtually.
